My Life's Profile

Life began for Phyllis on September 25, 1952 in Quincy, Florida. She was the oldest of nine children born to Roman and Mildred McNeal. On Friday, July 8, 2005, our beloved mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend Phyllis Simmons was transcended from this life of mortality into a life of immortality.

At an early age, Phyllis accepted Christ and faithfully served Him until her passing. She was a sweet, joyful young girl and was loved by everyone. Her sweet countenance and smiling face was a joy to all whom she met. She was a devoted member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church where she served as Adult Sunday School Teacher, choir member and after school math tutor. Phyllis was also the corresponding secretary of the Union Baptist Association.

Phyllis attended the public schools of Gadsden County and was a 1970 graduate of Carter-Parramore High School. Always with a zeal for knowledge, she continued her eduction by receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics at Florida A&M University, FAMU, where she also excelled.

Upon graduation from FAMU, Phyllis was employed by the Gadsden County Public School System as a math teacher. She dedicated 26 years of her life as an educator to the students of Gadsden County. She was simply a wiz at math and loved it.

Phyllis was blessed to be united in holy matrimony on June 6, 1976 to the late Willie Simmons, who preceded her in death. To this union three beautiful children were born.

She leaves to cherish her memories: one son, Willie R. Simmons, two daughters, Valeka Simmons and Catina Simmons-Russ (Leon); devoted parents, Roman and Mildred McNeal; two grandchildren, Jalen Perkins and JaJuan Perkins; five sisters, Meloneze Moore (Alfred), Julia McNeal-Branch (Tommy Lee), Sandra Riles (Willie), Sharon McNeal, Kimberly McNeal-Johnson (Dwayne); three brothers, Charlie McNeil, Tony D. McNeal (Denise) and Reginald McNeal (Fanita); several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and a host of special friends and relatives.
